Bookstore Finds and Reviews

I have a hard time passing by a bookstore, especially a used one with a children’s section, without going in to see what they have and the other weekend was no exception. Sterling and I went to our local farmers market and there is a great little used bookstore on the same street so in we went to see what we could find. I was trying to be nice to my wallet so only three books came home but we’re loving what we picked.

Horton entend un Zou! (Horton hears a Who) by Dr. Seuss

This one is as actually a new book, but I try to buy Sterling French books when I have the chance. They help Sterling pick up French words, give me something to practice with and I love when Didier gets a chance at doing storytime in his own language. This is our second Dr. Seuss book in French, but I didn’t notice until we got home that this one was JUST in French and not a dual language one like we’re used to. Didier still got a kick out of it and Sterling listened because Papa was reading, but he didn’t catch as many words this way.

Zog by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler

Sterling a I both recognized the illustrations on this book before we even saw what it was. We are big fans of Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo and to find another book by this duo was a treat. Much like Room on the Broom there is lots of rhythmic and repetitive text which makes it a great book for Sterling as he starts to say the phrases with me. It’s also just a really cute story. If you have the chance to find one, definitely pick it up.

Igraine the Brave by Cornelia Funke

Inkheart is one of my favorite young reader series and I’m also a big fan of Dragon Rider and The Thief Lord so when a friend mentioned finding this in the library I decided to check the stacks at the bookstore to see if they had a copy. It’s a fun, easy read about a young girl who dreams of being a knight in a family full of magicians and I would recommend it, but, it’s definitely for a younger reader than Funke’s other books that I have read. It would be a great book for eager readers who are just venturing into chapter books but aren’t quite ready for the Inkheart/Harry Potter level reads.

Overall a very nice haul from our local bookstore.
